Description

A Virgen de Guadalupe figure made of clay with a nativity scene at the base of figure. Baby Jesus in a manger is in the middle of the nativity scene with the rest of the nativity figures surrounding the baby Jesus. The Virgin de Guadalupe figure holds flowers in her hands and a angel stands on top of her crown. This piece is representative of Vasquez's more elaborate figures that are covered with tiny figures which form a diorama of religious scenes and village life. Her pieces are made with a special locally-found clay that allows her to work in a very small scale. She colors the natural clay with slips made from a variety of other clays, some used because they have been used for years in her part of Oaxaca.
