Description

This is a Hopi Chasing Star Dancer Kachina. He is a symbol for the plants and the stars, and can resurrect those that have fallen from the sky, by lifting them back up to the stars. The kachina holds a bell in its right hand and yucca whips in its left. Yucca whips are carried by the Whipper Kachinas, to be used to strike blows on the young initiates and on each other during the kachina ceremony. The artist of this kachina, Rod Phillips, carved the pueblos of his home in Old Oraibi, AZ and two Hopi corn maidens into the base of the kachina.
