Mestre Vitalino
This is a ceramic mask made of layered clay that creates a 3D effect. The mask has a moon and star attached to its forehead area. The mask is meant for hanging on a wall since it contains thread at its top for hanging. The mask is probably from Brazil and resembles clay pieces by Vitalino Pereira dos Santos or Mestre Vitalino, as he is better known. Mestre Vitalino was from Caruaru in the State of Pernambuco and his sculptural work in clay made him famous in Brazil and allowed him to show his work around the world. Today, artists in the Alto Do Moura neighborhood of Caruaru carry on the tradition of creating small clay sculptures in the style of Vitalino. This particular mask may be one made by one of those artists and not by Vitalino.
