Description

This is a Barong Mask from Bali, Indonesia. According to Indonesian mythology, Barong is a spirit that can take multiple forms but most often is portrayed as a lion-like creature in masks, such as this one. The Barong mask is a means of both giving the spirit tangible form and harnessing its energy. The mask is used in the traditional Barong dance, a fight between good, the Barong, and evil, Rangda the witch.
