Description

This is a mask from Papua New Guinea probably made by the Iatmul People of the Sepik River Valley. The mask is made of painted carved wood with woven reed surrounding the mask. A mask like this would traditionally be hung on the large gable area of a men’s house as a protector spirit. The mask's function is two fold - to protect the house from evil spirits and to watch over village laws and customs.
