This is a Jero Luh mask, one of two beings in the Indonesian Barong Landung dance and puppetry tradition. In the dance, the mask is exposed in the temple on a large anthropomorphic wooden structure – a sort of giant puppet as tall as three metres – and it is carried in procession with its male counterpart to ensure the success of the ceremony.
