Description

This is a Namahage mask from Japan. The mask is carved wood with a painted face to make it appear demon-like. The mask also has long hair made of natural fiber. Namahage is a folk event unique to the Oga Peninsula in Oga city, Akita Ken. In Japanese folklore, the Namahage mask represents a demon looking god that traditionally visits the homes of families on new year's eve to scare and warn children to work hard in school and their studies.
