This is a Tengu mask from Japan. It is made with painted papier mache and has facial hair made of straw or other natural fiber. Tengu, is a phallic-nosed forest goblin traditionaly used during festivals in Japan, but is also used in Japanese homes as decorative item that provides the home Tengu's protective charm. In Japanese folklore, Tengu are from the mountainous regions of Japan and fly from treetop to treetop carried by expansive feathered wings. Tengu are meant to be scary but not evil and if you show the proper respect, they’ve been known to share special knowledge to humans.
