These carved Ebony figures are attached to a circular wood base that wraps around the back of the figures. These figures mostly likely originated from the Makonde Tribe of Tanzania. Ebony is an exceptionally hard and dense black beautiful wood found in East Africa. In Africa it is also known as “Mpingo”. The Makonde artisans use this wood to make these fabulous balancing statues known as "Sarakai" which means acrobat in Swahili. Their artistic output is both traditional and contemporary. When finished, the carvings are polished and the wood quite literally shines.
