This is a large wood shield created by the tribal people of the middle Sepik River Region of Papua New Guinea. Made of carved and painted wood, the shield has small cowrie and nassa shells decorating the eyes and tied grass weavings as nose rings. This shield was probably made in the 1960s and was made for sale and not native use. For more information on Papua New Guinea and Pacific Islands tribal art, visit www.new-guinea-tribal-arts.com.
