This is a Guatemalan Huipil from Chichicastenango, a town in the Guatemalan highlands, northwest of Guatemala City. It’s known for its open-air craft market and indigenous Maya culture. This three panel huipil features vibrant and intricate geometric designs woven into both sides. The collar is accented with the classic radiating sun in red and black that is traditional for Chichicastenango huipils. The huipil was likely hand woven on a backstrap loom and the geometric designs were added during the weaving process using the technique of supplemental weft brocading.
