This is a Faja (sash or belt) from San Juan Sacatepequez, Guatemala. This faja was most likely woven by hand on a narrow backstrap loom. Long sashes are a signature item of clothing for the Maya weavers of San Juan Sacatepequez. This particular sash is 94.5 inches long (not counting the fringe) and 6 inches wide at the widest point. The foundation is cotton, and the bright brocaded designs are also 100% cotton. The ends of the sash are formed by loose warp threads.
