This is a huipil from the town of Santa Maria Nebaj in Guatemala. Nabaj is a highland town in the region known as Quiche. The indigenous population of the area are known as Ixil where they have their own distinct language. Woven by hand on a backstrap loom, this huipil is made of embroidered cotton with various shapes and animal figures. The vertical striped sides of the huipil may be from commercial fabric and added onto the huipil to widen it and lengthen the life of the huipil.
