Description

This is a Turkmen Children’s Ceremonial tunic. The Turkmens, sometimes referred to as "Turkmen Turks", are a Turkic ethnic group native to Central Asia, living mainly in Turkmenistan, northern and northeastern regions of Iran and north-western Afghanistan. This tunic is decorated by hand with tassels, pieces of stamped silver, shells, beads, and other ornaments that are meant to protect the child from misfortune. The fabrics on the tunic are a mix of materials - wool and cotton patterned fabrics that are leftovers from rugs and other textile creations. The tunic is probably from the mid-twentieth century but this is only an estimate.
