Dominique Haas Gahnke
A leather mask depicting a laughing face and a frowning face. The mask is hand made out of a whole piece of leather. Dominique Haas has been sculpting leather and selling his work since 1987. He left his home of Pompey, France to live in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Jamaica in the mid-1980's before moving to Mexico in 1993 and setting up shop in Acalpulco. In Mexico, he uses fine quality leather from the central highlands of Mexico to craft leather art that is distinctively his. He prepares the leather and later shapes each mask from one seamless piece. His work has been exhibited at the Nader Galleries, in the gallery of painter Candido Bibo in the Dominican Republic and in small galleries in the U.S. and Canada.
